Habitica gives you a pixel warrior. We give you you.

Two takes on gamified habits, and one big disagreement about punishment.

Habitica has been running since 2013, it's open source, and it has a community that will cheerfully out-argue you about task categorisation. It got gamified habits right long before anyone else took the idea seriously, and if you're reading a comparison post about it, you already know why it works.

We built something adjacent, with two deliberate differences: our character is a full-colour 3D model of you rather than a pixel adventurer, and we do not damage you when you miss a day. This post is about whether those differences matter for what you are trying to do.

What Habitica actually is

A task manager wearing a 16-bit RPG. You define Habits, Dailies and To-Dos. Completing them earns gold and experience. Missing a Daily costs your character health. Spend gold on gear, hatch pets, join a party, fight a boss with friends, and take collective damage when someone in the party slips.

It's a productivity app first. Fitness is one thing you can track in it, alongside flossing, inbox zero and practising guitar. That flexibility is its greatest strength and, for a lot of people, its onboarding problem — a well-known knock on Habitica is the learning curve.

ftns.ai is narrower on purpose. It is a fitness habit game. One character, one score, one loop.

The consequence question

This is the real difference, and it's worth more than a feature table.

Habitica's model is loss aversion. Miss your Dailies and your character takes damage. Miss enough and your character dies and you lose levels. It is a legitimate design — loss aversion is a powerful motivator, and for a certain kind of person it is exactly the right pressure.

For a lot of other people it is the reason the app is on their phone but unopened. A bad week becomes a punishment waiting behind an icon, and the rational move is to stop looking.

We took a different route. Your twin reflects a trend, not a day.

Your twin's build recomputes weekly, not daily. A single missed session doesn't visibly change your character — deliberately, because if it did, the model would be lying and you'd know it. Between weekly updates your twin carries a mood that reflects recent behaviour, so it still reacts to you. It's just not holding a health bar over your head.

There are streak freezes too, so a bad Tuesday does not cost you months of momentum, and XP never decreases — on a day you do not act, you simply do not gain any. The whole progression loop is here.

The design goal is consequence without punishment. Your twin can look tired. Your twin cannot die.

Two characters, two relationships

Habitica's avatar is a fantasy character you dress. You pick a class, you buy gear, you look like a mage. It's cosplay, and cosplay is fun.

Your ftns.ai twin is generated from you at onboarding and then it is you, in the app, for as long as you play — a full-colour 3D model built to your own proportions. That changes what progress feels like. Levelling a mage is an achievement. Watching yourself stand differently after six good weeks is something else.

And then there is the part Habitica has no equivalent for: Future Self. Six time horizons, three timelines — Current Pace, On Plan and Coasting. Free, unlimited, never gated behind gems. It is the most screenshot-able thing in our app and the last thing we would ever charge for.

Money, and giving credit where it is due

Habitica's monetisation is genuinely honest, and it is the model we followed.

Their subscription runs $4.99 monthly, $14.99 quarterly, $29.99 semi-annually, or $47.99 annually. Gems sell in bundles from $0.99 to $19.99. And critically, their own documentation is explicit that Habitica is not pay-to-win — no gem purchase gives any gameplay or stat advantage. Group plans run $9 a month plus $3 per member.

Ours: $4.99 a month for monthly cosmetic drops, a bonus gem stipend and a supporter badge only you can see. Everything functional is free — twin care, missions, the Life Score, Apple Health sync, weekly updates, Future Self. Nothing that affects your score or progress is ever behind a paywall.

That's the same principle at the same price. We'd rather say so than pretend we invented it.

Where Habitica is straightforwardly better

  • Breadth. If you want one system for chores, deadlines, reading, hydration and guitar practice, Habitica does that and we do not. We track a wide slice of life, but it is a fitness slice.
  • Party accountability. Real friends, real shared consequences. We have given that up on purpose, and if group accountability is what makes habits stick for you, we are the wrong app.
  • Platform coverage and maturity. Web, iOS and Android, plus a decade of development and an open-source codebase you can read.

Where we are better

  • If you want fitness, not a to-do list. Steps, workouts and sleep flow in automatically. You do not type them in and hope.
  • If punishment loops make you quit. No health bar, no death, no lost levels. Miss a week and your twin looks a bit flat. Come back and it does not.
  • If you want the character to be you. That is the whole product.
  • If you want privacy. No social feed, no friends list, no leaderboards — not now, not later. One share card you export yourself, when you want to.

The short version

Habitica is the best gamified system for everything you have to do. ftns.ai is a game about the person doing it.

If your to-do list is the problem, go build a party and fight a boss. If the problem is that you know what to do and it just never feels like it counts, that is the one we made.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Habitica alternative for fitness?

ftns.ai is built for the fitness case specifically: Apple Health fills in steps, workouts and sleep, everything rolls into one Life Score, and your character is a full-colour 3D twin of you rather than a fantasy avatar. Habitica remains the better choice if you want one system covering every kind of task.

Does ftns.ai punish you for missing a day like Habitica does?

No. There is no health bar, nothing dies, and XP never decreases — on a day you do not act you simply do not gain any. Your twin rebuilds weekly on the trend and its mood softens in between. Streak freezes cover the days life gets in the way.

Is ftns.ai pay-to-win?

No. Premium is $4.99 a month and buys monthly cosmetic drops, a bonus gem stipend and a supporter badge only you can see. Nothing purchasable affects your Life Score, your XP, your streak or your tracking. Habitica applies the same principle at the same price.

Can Habitica track workouts automatically?

Habitica is built around manual entry, with third-party plugins for automation. ftns.ai syncs steps, workouts and sleep from Apple Health directly, and imported workouts de-duplicate against anything you logged by hand.

ftns.ai is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Habitica or HabitRPG. Habitica details are drawn from publicly available sources as of 20 August 2026 and may have changed. Spot something wrong? Tell us and we will fix it.
