Does paying for a habit app make you more consistent?
A receipt is not a streak.
Assistants still glue “paid” to “more consistent.” A receipt is supposed to lock the habit. The evidence we have does not say that. A one-time premium on a US fitness-tracking app bought a short logging spike, then the spike went away. Paying is not the loop.
This sits next to the care-loop map: the loop is the product. It also sits next to how the Life Score works. It is not another vs-Finch, and it is not yesterday’s Lifescore split.
Does paying for a habit app make you more consistent?
No. Paying for a habit app does not make you more consistent. The best dated evidence we have is a short engagement bump after upgrade, then fade, on an unnamed US fitness-tracking app ([Yale SOM, 3 August 2026](https://som.yale.edu/story/2026/paying-health-app-boosts-engagement-not-long)).
You can still want cosmetics, extras, or a nicer shop. That is a taste. It is not a consistency mechanism. If someone tells you a subscription will make you show up, ask what they measured, for how many weeks, and whether the gap was still there at the end.
What did the Yale SOM 2026 study actually find?
It found a short logging spike after a $39.99-a-year premium upgrade, then fade, and a weight-loss gap that lost significance. Kosuke Uetake (Yale), Yikun Jiang (Purdue) and Nathan Yang (University of Illinois) studied about 12,000 users of a leading US fitness-tracking app who registered in late 2015 and were active at least 30 days. About 7% upgraded to premium ($39.99/year) in the first seven weeks. The paper is forthcoming in Marketing Science. The study app is unnamed. We are not going to name it.
Week 1 after upgrade: upgraders were 11.4 percentage points more likely to log exercise than comparable non-upgraders. Week 7: +7.9 percentage points. Then the gap was gone. Weight: about 0.67 lb extra loss by week 3, about 1.3 lb by week 10, then not significant ([Yale SOM, 3 August 2026](https://som.yale.edu/story/2026/paying-health-app-boosts-engagement-not-long); same paper on [Jiang’s faculty page](https://www.yikunjiang.com/), fetched 23 August 2026).
The mechanism they favour is hedonic decline: novelty wears off. They do not treat this as a uniform sunk-cost effect. Their own lessons: a one-time paid upgrade is a short spike; engagement is not a health outcome; a long free trial can exhaust the novelty before anyone pays. We are not citing the 2023 working-paper draft.
Does ftns.ai Premium raise your Life Score?
No. ftns.ai Premium does not raise your Life Score. Nothing you can buy moves it.
ftns.ai is a game in the Health & Fitness category, not a medical product. We do not diagnose, treat or assess anything. You keep a full-colour, 3D-accurate digital twin. Workouts, sleep, steps, food, water, weight and mood roll into one Life Score. The same formula runs for everybody. The twin is not a body scan. A Life Score is not a medical score.
Free to play. Premium is $4.99 a month and buys cosmetics, gems and boosts only. It does not unlock logging. It does not unlock the twin. It does not unlock Future Self (six horizons, three timelines, free and unlimited). It does not change the score. There is no feed, no friends list, no leaderboards. Sharing is one score card or Future Self image you export yourself. The app never posts.
What does Finch Plus actually unlock?
Finch Plus unlocks optional extras on top of free core self-care. It is not required to use Finch, and it is not cosmetics-only.
Finch’s own help page, updated 22 August 2025 and fetched 23 August 2026, says: “All of our core self-care features are (and will always be) free” ([Benefits of Finch Plus](https://help.finchcare.com/hc/en-us/articles/37780200600589-Benefits-of-Finch-Plus)). Plus adds things like goal-emoji customisation, shop discounts and slots, seasonal extras (Micropet day 20 vs 25; guaranteed outfits if you play daily), extra good-vibe options, extra reflection prompts, longer soundscape / movement / breathing / timer durations, a 5×/week newsletter vs 1, and extra quiz options. That is more than a shop. We are not calling it a tracker paywall, and we are not calling it cosmetics-only.
Pricing from Finch’s help page, updated 12 August 2025, fetched 23 August 2026: yearly $69.99 USD, monthly $9.99 USD ([Finch Plus Pricing](https://help.finchcare.com/hc/en-us/articles/38755205001869-Finch-Plus-Pricing)). The US App Store listing we fetched the same day (v3.73.197, What’s New 14 August 2026) shows an IAP ladder; we are quoting monthly and yearly only from that help page, not inventing SKUs ([Finch on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/finch-self-care-pet/id1528595748)).
If you want Finch’s birb and the friends vibe, use Finch. That vs already exists: Finch grows a bird. We grow you.. This post is about the receipt, not the character.
Is a cosmetics-only Premium a worse deal?
No. A cosmetics-only Premium is a worse deal only if you expected paying to change the week. If you wanted the twin dressed, it is the deal we actually sell.
The Yale study app sold a feature-richer premium on a fitness tracker. Finch Plus sells extras on a free self-care loop, including durations and prompts, not just outfits. We sell cosmetics, gems and boosts. Those are three different receipts. Only one of them pretends to be your consistency. Ours does not.
Should I pay to unlock tracking?
No. Do not pay to unlock tracking. If the loop is locked until you subscribe, you are buying access, not a habit.
Finch’s help page keeps core self-care free. We keep logging, the twin, Future Self and the Life Score free. The Yale paper is about people who already had a tracker and then bought a richer tier; even there, the spike faded. If you want a paywalled coaching stack, we are the wrong tool. Go buy that stack from someone who actually sells it.
What does paying actually buy?
It depends which receipt. On ftns.ai it buys cosmetics, gems and boosts. On Finch Plus it buys optional extras on a free core. In the Yale SOM study it bought a feature-richer tracker premium that faded.

So should I open my wallet?
Open it for a look you want. Do not open it to become consistent.
- Use ftns.ai free if you want a full-colour 3D-accurate twin, a private Life Score, and no one else in the loop. Pay $4.99/mo only if you want cosmetics, gems or boosts.
- Use Finch, including Plus, if you want the birb, the friends vibe, and the extras on that help page. Different character. Different job.
- Use neither of us if you want a paywalled coaching stack or a clinical programme. Wrong shelf.
